Plagiarism, according to the Merriam Webster dictionary, is “the act of stealing and passing off ideas or words of another’s as one’s own” but what would cause a university student to act unethically and plagiarize putting their reputation, education and future career at risk? Various causes and effects of plagiarism will be addressed.
The primary cause of university students plagiarizing is that they are not fully aware of what constitutes plagiarism, and this ignorance leads to unintentional plagiarism. Hence, it is imperative that all college students have a thorough understanding of what they can and cannot do in regards to plagiarism. The desire to get a good grade is another reason some students knowingly plagiarize. Students think they will never get caught, but with plagiarism detection software, it is only a matter of time. One more reason students plagiarize is out of desperation after procrastinating. Sometimes the temptation is too great, and after stumbling across a paper or paragraph on the internet, students copy and paste and pass it off as their own work. Students need to keep their commitment to excellence through their pledge of integrity, which includes being honest, just, and consistent in words and actions and refraining from any plagiarism.
It does not matter the cause of plagiarism; the effects are just the same. First, it negatively affects the student’s reputation and integrity and shows a lack of respect for fellow students and professors. Second, it may include sanctions like a failure on an assignment, course failure, suspension, or dismissal. Third, it negatively tarnishes the credibility of the college, which can, in turn, affect internships and future employment.

Plagiarism is using another person’s writing as your own without consent or citation. Plagiarism is a significant problem at all levels, but becomes more serious at a University. Many Universities utilize tools to measure how much of a students writing is original. They place an emphasis on plagiarism, warning students of the consequences, often before they begin the course. Many reasons exist for plagiarism, but at the university level, poor time management and the fear of failing are the main causes. If a student is accused or caught plagiarizing or cheating, he or she will likely fail the assignment and be suspended or dismissed.

Many students in college struggle to maintain a healthy balance between school and life. Often times, students solve this struggle with plagiarism. College is expensive and for many students, college is on their path to success. For these reasons, among embarrassment, make students fear failing the class. Failing a class could potentially cost thousands of dollars, or set goals back years. Plagiarism may seem appealing to those who are on a tight schedule or who are simply struggling with the material, but the consequences of cheating at the university level can be severe.

When a college student is caught plagiarizing, it is likely to negatively affect their academic or professional career. Many students cheat to get an acceptable score on the assignment, but if they’re caught, the assignment will surely be counted as a zero anyway. Depending on the severity of the plagiarism, the student can expect to be suspended or dismissed from the university altogether. This would have a life changing effect. The student would struggle to find another suitable school to attend after attaining a mark on his or her school record. Cheating can be tempting but the consequences supersede the risk.

There are many causes to plagiarism. Some examples of causes are: feeling rushed to complete an assignment, viewing cheating as unimportant, receiving unclear assignment guidelines, and fearing failure of an assignment or course. In the simplest of terms, it is those students who are completely aware of their actions that constitute plagiarism (“Causes of Plagiarism”). By being aware of what they are doing, these students have no integrity, and thus their values do not align with Saint Leo University’s Core Values of integrity and respect. There are also cases where students may unknowingly plagiarize due to lack of knowledge of citing research or other citing errors. Under these circumstances, the student is not guilty of plagiarism because he or she tried, but failed, to acknowledge others’ work (“Causes of Plagiarism”). However, this does not excuse the behavior, and the student will need to correct the issue.

The effects to plagiarizing can be severe. A student may fail an assignment or course because he or she failed to cite his or her sources correctly. For more serious scenarios or repeated behavior, a student can be suspended from attending classes or expelled completely from the university. Moreover, plagiarizers may face legal consequences, such as fines or jail time. Instructors can include the university an course-specific information on plagiarizing in the syllabus so all students are made aware of potential repercussions. Fortunately, technology has made identifying potential plagiarism easier with the introduction of plagiarism checkers. Students will want to ensure they are utilizing resources available to them so that they can avoid copying others’ work.
