Throughout the last decade new media startups have launched built around innovative technology to extend our use of media in profound yet often simple ways (Facebook in 2004, YouTube in 2005, Twitter in 2006, Instagram in 2010, Snapchat in 2011, etc.). This assignment necessitates two smaller writing frames. First, peruse the The New Yorker’s archive of “Annals in Technology” (http:// class=”screenreader-only”> (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..) In looking through the articles, I want you to pick one article to briefly introduce, discuss, and analyze the technology discussed and its relationship to media. More importantly, the article you chose will serve as a springboard for introducing your own media-based technological innovation. For example, you might read “Streaming Dreams” and discuss how an alternative streaming site could function differently than YouTube, and improve on some of the issues discussed in the article. Different articles might better lend themselves to this assignment (I recognize some are less media-based), but part of this assignment is to creatively come up with a media innovation to a particularly framed technological discussion, which will be provided by the various articles in The New Yorker.

Following your discussion of The New Yorker article, introduce your related media-driven innovation and then elaborate and expand your argument. Position your innovation within the current industry landscape of your particular media, or at a site of convergence between different media. Be sure your media innovation directly addresses aspects of the article while also responding to materials we have read or discussed this semester. For example, try to draw from our early readings on media theory to support your reasoning. You must make a media-based argument in your essay, since this class is a media studies course and obviously not a business class. Therefore, write to your audience, which is me, someone in media studies and not someone with an MBA. So, do not worry excessively about costs, venture funding, etc. While this paper topic can be quite fun to write, it can also be challenging because you need to maintain a relatively formal, organized writing style while expounding about an innovation you are only imagining.
