I attached the reading for this week. Please follow the instructions to do the interactive video on TEDed.

Introduction

For this assignment, you will use TEDEd technology to create interactive videos like the ones you have seen at the beginning of this course. It’s a lot easier than you think!

Assignment

To receive credit for this assignment, you will do the following:

  • Visit Youtube. Find a video related to this week’s topic (ethical use of technology/media). A good video is one that you could potentially use to teach students (in a future class that you might teach) about ethical uses of online technology. This is broad topic, so you can choose from a wide variety of videos. However, the length of the video should be between 2-10 minutes. After you have chosen a video, copy the URL of the video so you can use it later in TEDEd.
  • Visit the TEDEd website and create an account, if you haven’t done so already.
  • After you have created an account, use the TEDEd web application to convert your chosen video to an interactive video. Follow the steps below to create an interactive video.
    • Click “Create a Lesson+”
    • After you choose “Create a Lesson +,” a box will appear that prompts you to enter the URL of your video. You can type or paste the URL of your chosen video into the box indicated in the picture below or you can type in a keyword (if you have not searched for a video). Click “Search” or the magnifying glass when you’re ready.
    • Once you click “Search” your video should appear. If you typed in a keyword, several related videos will appear. Choose your video to get started.
  • Now your video is ready for you to add interactive elements.
  • Click “Continue” in the next box that appears.
  • For this assignment, you will need to create 5 different elements for your video. You can see the elements in the screen capture shown below. These are next to the red arrows. They include the following: Let’s Begin, Think, Dig Deeper, Discuss, and And Finally. To complete each of these elements, click on the “+” symbol next to the red arrows.
  • A description of each element is provided below:
    • Let’s Begin: Write an introduction to your video.
    • Think: Create 3 questions (2 multiple choice and 1 open-ended).
    • Dig Deeper: Add supplemental information for your students. It can be anything you want.
    • Discuss: Write a prompt for a discussion.
    • And Finally: Conclude (What is the takeaway message?)
  • You’re done! Now you need to share it. Click the “Publish” button and grab the URL for this project.
  • Copy the URL and submit it here on this assignment page in Canvas.
  • Wow! That was easy, right?
  • This was just one way to make an interactive video. Please watch the videos below for other approaches. However, the best way to learn any web application or software is to play around with the interface.
  • IMPORTANT: To complete this assignment, you are also required to interact with a video that a classmate has made. Canvas will assign another student’s video after you submit your assignment and when a partner is available. You can find the link on the submission page when a partner has been assigned. Be sure to complete the rubric and to leave a comment. Otherwise, the system won’t register that you have peer-reviewed a classmate’s work. Due date for peer-review is September 10, 8:00 PM.

Videos to get you started

The content for these videos are not related to the content for this course, but they are interesting to watch nonetheless. However, the activities at the end of these videos are similar to those that I’m asking you to create. Have fun! 🙂

How you will be graded

Please review the attached rubric to see how you will be graded.

How to submit

You will submit the link to your video here on this assignment page. After you have completed your video, copy the URL. Click the “Submit” button above (in Canvas). When prompted by Canvas, paste the URL in the box that appears.

Note: Make sure that your link works prior to submitting it. Non-working links will be given a zero score. Unfortunately, due to the large number of students in the class, I cannot check your links for you. Please ask a friend for assistance in this matter.
