Situation

The goal of writing a documented research paper is for you to become more familiar with a specific topic, issue or concept, while engaging with the ongoing discussion that surrounds your point of interest. It is now your job to specialize your base of knowledge towards your own specific inquiry, and to claim your own distinct position as stemming from your research. The specific approach that you take is up to you, and should be pursued and shaped according to your concerns and interests within the specific field of knowledge that you choose.

Task

The research paper requires you to formulate a coherent and specific argument based on the general issues that we have dealt with in our 161 class and in our readings. It is your choice as to which specific direction your research goes, but it is necessary that you formulate your own original claim that brings original insight to the discussion. Your argument must be clear and central to your paper, and you must also address other critical sources that further develop and complicate your inquiry. In the research paper, you will use all of the skills that we have focused on so far: summary, analysis, and synthesis.

Sources, Documentation, and Format

-Include a minimum of 8 credible sources that are relevant to your inquiry: at least 6 of the sources must be academic journal articles or book/book chapters. Wikipedia is not a credible source.

-It must be typed, double spaced with one-inch margins and 12-point times font.

-Include a complete works cited page acknowledging all sources used in your paper.
